A New York based global non profit organisation named Women in Music (WIM) has been launched in India. It aims to end the gender disparity and promote women’s visibility in the Indian music industry.
It was established in New York in the year 1985. Priyanka Khimani the head of the Indian chapter, said that the objective is to achieve a 50-50 representation for women in the music industry. She felt that there are less women in the field and women’s careers often take a back seat due to their family commitments. A partner of a prominent legal firm, she has represented several top artistes including Lata Mangeshkar, A R.Rahman, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kalyanji- Anandji etc. Every year there is a conference on music called “All about Music. During the conference held last year, it was decided that Women in Music would be launched in India and accordingly it was launched and the inaugural function was held this week.
