Bano was gang-raped and seven of her relatives, including her three-year old daughter, were killed during religious riots that broke out in Gujarat in 2002. Last week, a Mumbai court upheld the conviction of 11 Hindu men to life in prison for the rape and murder in one of the worst incidents of religious rioting in India. (AP Photo/Ajit Solanki)

The Supreme Court ordered the Gujarat government to give Bilkis Bano Rs 50 lakhs as compensation, a government job and a house. She was a victim of the 2002 communal riots which took place in Gujarat where she saw the devastation of her family. While speaking at a press conference, Ms Bano said that she had faith in the Constitution and that the Supreme Court stood by her.

She is happy with the compensation awarded to her and plans to give her daughter a stable future. She hopes her daughter would grow up to become a lawyer to defend and stand up for the rights of others. She plans to use part of the money to help other women survivors of communal violence and to help with the education of their children.
