Xiomara Castro,42, was sworn in as the first woman President of Honduras yesterday. She took oath at an impressive ceremony attended by international dignitaries. She took oath before Judge Karla Romero before an audience of around 29,000 people. The guests included US Vice President Kamala Harris, King Felipe VI of Spain and Vice President of Taiwan William Lai.
During her first official address at the Tegucigalpa National Stadium, she denounced the social and economic tragedy that is plaguing the country and promised to improve education, healthcare, security and employment in the country.
As of now, Honduras’s public debt is about $17 billion. Castro made it clear that though she was going to head a ”bankrupt” country, she intended to convert it into a ”socialist and democratic state”.
