Members of the Indian women’s hockey team broke down during a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM had called the team after its agonising loss to Great Britain and consoled the players. He said ”All of you have played really well. You have left everything in the past five years, sweating it out for the sport. Your hard work and sweat didn’t get a medal but it has become the inspiration for crores of girls in the country. I congratulate the coach and all of you.”
The entire team gathered around the phone to hear the PM speak.
The players could not fight back their tears as the PM praised their efforts. He urged the players to stop crying and consoled them saying that the entire country is proud of them.
The coach of the Indian team, Sjoerd Marijne was applauded by the PM for his efforts. The 47 year old has done an excellent job to guide Team India to a creditable fourth place finish. Sadly, this is his last assignment with the team. He was offered an extension by the Sports Authority of India but he refused the offer due to personal reasons.
