Women judges in Kerala have the freedom to wear outfits other than sarees to court. They can now wear long skirts, churidars and full sleeves shirts and pants but it has to be in the black and white combination.

The Kerala High Court last week cleared a request from women judges allowing them to wear modern dresses in courts. The more than half a century old dress code has been modified.
Women found it difficult and uncomfortable to wear sarees in the hot and humid climate in poorly ventilated chambers and packed court halls. The frequent power disruptions added to their woes. This old fashioned dress code was taking a toll on their health especially in the summer season.
The High Court had appointed a committee of judges to look into the representation. They prepared a report which was placed before the Administrative Committee and later at a Full Court meeting. The Chief Justice of Kerala made a formal announcement on the modified dress code at a meeting of the Judicial Officers Association on October 8.
