G.Subbu Lakshmi, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Washermanpet broke many conventions but won many hearts by carrying the body of a junior police officer to the crematorium. The uniformed officer led the procession carrying the corpse on her shoulder and other women police officers followed her.
The deceased policewoman, K. Sreedevi, a resident of Vepery was working as an Inspector of Police in the Tondiarpet, All Women Police Station. She joined the force in 1991 and died due to ill health. She is survived by her husband and a six year old daughter. Subbu Lakshmi said that it was her way of showing respect for a deceased colleague and also a way of reaching out to to a member of the family of police personnel. Her kind gesture has won great appreciation from other police personnel.
