President Ram Nath Govind has cleared a bill against witch hunting that was passed by the Assam Assembly three years back. A 65 year old woman Birubala Rabha has been campaigning against superstition that has claimed hundreds of lives.Now people cannot get away with killing or maiming people in the name of witchcraft.
The offence has been made non- bailable and non-compoundable. The Act prescribes a prison term up to seven years and fine up to Rs 5 lakhs for calling a person a witch.Birubala Rabha has been instrumental in curbing this menace.Another important person behind the legislation is the Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia who launched Project Prahari to check the menace.
