Vaishali and coach Ramesh receive awards from the President

R.Vaishali who is India’s latest grandmaster has been awarded the prestigious Arjuna award while her trainer GM RB Ramesh has been conferred the Dronacharya award.

Vaishali bagged the award for her good performance in chess over a period of 4 years. She won a cash prize of $19,000, a bronze statuette and a ceremonial dress from President Droupadi Murmu. She was voted Chess.com’s Woman Player of the Year and became India’s 84th grandmaster recently. She is the third woman grandmaster in India. Koneru Humpy became a GM in 2002 and Dronavalli Harika became one in 2011.
Her brother Pragg received the Arjuna award in 2022 while five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand received the Arjuna award way back in 1985. He tweeted that ” it is a proud moment for the Indian chess community” on X.
