US President Joe Biden will sign a bill today that will grant protection to same sex marriage. Thousands of people are gathering at the White House to celebrate this legislative milestone.
There will be a gathering of a group of Republican and Democratic lawmakers on the White House grounds along with advocates for the celebration according to spokesperson Karine Jean Pierre. She stated that this legislation will give the LGBTQ+ community peace of mind and will also guarantee them protection.
The US Supreme Court in 2015 legalized the union of same sex couples and since then thousands of them got married. The general public have also supported these unions.
The new legislation called the Respect for Marriage Act does not require states to legalize same sex marriages but requires them to recognize such marriages as long as it was valid in the state where it was performed.
