According to a report by the United Nations Interagency Group for Child Mortality Estimation, in India, three infants die every two minutes on an average due to lack of proper nutrition, sanitation facilities and lack of access to clean drinking water.
In 2017, about 8 lakhs of infants died and this figure remains the highest in the world. However Dr. Gagan Gupta the Chief of health at the World Health Organisation said that India is making good progress to reduce infant mortality through a number of government led initiatives. He said that India has a birth rate of 25 million per year and 18 percent of the children born in the world are from India.
