Campaign group 38 Degrees has launched a petition in a bid to ban the sale of all plastic glitter in the UK. The petition appeals to Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, to ban plastic glitter, which is said to cause harm to the environment.
The authorities have no idea what long term effects micro-plastic will have on us, our children or the other animals and plants that share our planet. This is a very disturbing thought. A recent study that finds one-third of fish in the North Sea contained microplastic particles.
Glitter might look lovely but, because it’s plastic, it sticks around long after the sparkle has gone – often in the stomachs of fish and birds. Some major supermarkets are moving to ban these harmful microplastics, but the British public is clear; supermarkets should be moving faster to tackle plastic waste. Aiming for 2000 signatures, the petition has amassed 1500 at the time of writing.
