Mother Teresa was declared a saint in the year 2016. Today, the 26th of August is her 112th birth anniversary. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
She was born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu Skopje in Macedonia on August 26th, 1910. She received the call of God at the early age of 12 and decided to become a missionary. She left her parental home in 1928 and joined an Irish community of nuns called Sisters of Loreto that had missions in India.
She was sent to India where she taught in a school in Kolkata from 1931 to 1948 and came across poverty stricken people. She was moved by their plight and founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, an organization that works for the poor irrespective of class, creed or colour.
She received recognition for her work across the globe and received various awards. She was canonised as a saint by the Pope at a ceremony in the Vatican in 2016.
