The Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PM – EGP ) which is a credit linked subsidy scheme which has been implemented since 2008 has women from Tamilnadu who appear in the second position. They have been overtaken by Uttar Pradesh in establishing more units. Women in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal altogether started 36018 micro enterprises and have generated employment in both urban and rural areas.The State of Assam is another place where more than 10,000 women entrepreneurs have joined the venture.
This scheme has been aimed at generating self employment opportunities through establishment of micro enterprises in the non farm sector and helping traditional artisans and unemployed youth in rural and urban areas. The maximum cost of the project is Rs 25 lacs for manufacturing sector units and Rs 10 lakh for service sector units.Under the scheme for women beneficiaries, own contribution is only 5% of the project cost while for general category it is 10%
