Craft beer and zesty food are the order of the day at the hip microbrewery that is taking JP Nagar by storm
BY NAMITA GUPTA
One of the largest microbreweries in south Bengaluru, The Pump House is where you can expect an austere experience to quench your thirst for chilled craft beer and intriguing food.
Ambience: What is striking the moment you step into The Pump House, isthe open-air alfresco space, which brings in the natural elements inside striking an enigmatic balance with the interiors that is exquisite and artistic. There is a completely retractable roof that slides and closes in case of downpour or bright sunlight. The massive three-floored superstructure spread across 19,000 sq.ft. is always buzzing with an energetic atmosphere that flows throughout the day and into the evening. The concept of a pump house is directly associated with the flow of water. Curves are an integral part of the design of the space – be it the slightly elevated seating pods on the ground floor, the curves of a movable wall that can be lowered to bring in more breeze, the brick-lined circular wave-like structures demarcating each of the three levels. In fact, all three bars – on the ground and higher levels follow this circular display style. The seating on the ground floor has been created in an amphitheatre-style on two levels, giving each group of diners a different vantage point. Looking down on it from the higher floors gives the space a unique visual appeal. The desert fans certainly help in maintaining comfortable temperatures when the place packs up. The staircases leading up to the higher levels have their handrails inspired from a famous French Bridge. All the materials used in the creation of the space are completely local – from the bricks on the walls to the Cuddapah on the floors. Special attention has been given to the lights. The roof has been lined with colour changing LEDs. On first glance they look red but they can turn into a range of colours adding a level of dynamism to this brewpub.
Food & drinks: What you’ll get here is bespoke hospitality service, best in class brews and lip-smacking delicacies. The upscale brewpub is home to some of the finest craft beers in the ‘Pub Capital of India. To keep up with the tag the city has acquired, the brewpub has flown in a seasoned brewmaster from the United States, who plays a significant role in the overall functioning of the place and offers exquisite set of brews for beer connoisseurs. No wonder, guzzlers around this area, frequent this brewery regularly. Each of the dishes are delicious and when paired with in-house brews, they acquire an irresistible combination, promising to keep you in high spirits. Chef Vishal Atreya, an exceptionally committed culinary expert, showcases his impeccable set of gastronomical skills with his mastery over Western, Indian and Asian cuisines. The menu is exhaustive and there’s something for all taste buds. We recommend the Muesli Chaat that is not only crunchy on the bite, but also healthy. Try the Bird Eye Chilli and Basil Tossed Fish if you’re a fish lover. Vegetarians will like the Masala Bharwan Mushroom, Honey Chilli Lotus Stem and Malai Broccoli. The Madras Curry Lamb Fry is also a must-have dish here. But the one that wins our vote is the Moilee Prawns. This coconut milk flavoured shrimp is simple in flavours yet delightful. You cannot leave Pump House without a slice of their heavenly pizzas. Try the Rustica pizza with roasted chicken, mushroom and mozzarella. For desserts, try The Baked Alaska and the Berry Cheese Cake. Both are so divine that you will probably go back to JP Nagar, only for a bite of these sweet treats.
