Chennai will get a new greenfield airport at Parandur at an estimated cost of Rs 20,000 crore. The existing airport at Meenambakkam and the new airport at Parandur will function simultaneously according to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin.
The new airport will have terminals that can handle 10 crore passengers a year, two runways, taxiways, cargo etc. The site clearance will be submitted to the Ministry of Aviation. After getting approval, the State will start preparing for land acquisition as well as preparation of a detailed project report.
The proposed airport is 57 kms away from the current airport.. A week ago, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia held a meeting with Tamil Nadu Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu regarding the location for the second airport. The other proposed location was Pannur.
