Fathima Latheef, a first year student of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras committed suicide few days ago. The police have interrogated a dozen people including professors, staff and students. The family alleged that she killed herself as she was being harassed by the faculty.
Her mobile phone was traced and her father retrieved a suicide note from it wherein she named a particular teacher who was harassing her. Her parents met the Chief Minister of Kerala and demanded for a fair probe. They claimed that the girl was a topper and dismissed the version of the police that she took her life as she could not score good marks. Efforts to reach the institute did not yield any results. They only released a note stating the initiatives taken by them to prevent suicides on the campus.
