The entire fleet of buses belonging to the eight State Transport Corporations will be fitted with CCTV cameras shortly. This is done with a bid to enhance the security of women passengers. This was disclosed by Deputy Chief Minister O. Paneerselvam while presenting the budget for 2020-2021.
The closed circuit television cameras will be installed in 19,500 buses at a cost of Rs 75.02 crores under the Nirbhaya fund. Besides this, new buses would also be purchased. An electronic ticketing system will be introduced shortly so that commuters can book tickets online. The government has made a provision to purchase 2,213 new buses with diesel engines. In addition to this, talks are on regarding finalising the contract for purchase of 525 electric buses under the FAME India ll Project. These buses would run in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Madurai, Erode, Tiruppur, Salem, Vellore and Thanjavur.
