Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency today due to massive protests after President Rajapaksa flew to the Maldives after months of protests against an economic crisis.

An indefinite curfew has been imposed across the Western Province including Colombo to contain the escalating protests. President Rajapaka will be sending in his resignation letter shortly and in the meantime Prime Minister Wickremesinghe has been appointed as the acting President of the country.
President Rajapaksa enjoys immunity from arrest and he fled to the Maldives with his wife and two bodyguards by a military aircraft. On their arrival at the Maldives, they were driven to an undisclosed location under police escort.
The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka has dismissed reports claiming that India helped President Rajapaksa to flee from the country.
