The State Government is working on a new model of managing working women’s hostels. They have plans to approach the Centre for financial assistance of Rs 40 crores. The funds are sought from the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development.
The initial plan is to build hostels in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Hosur and Tiruchirapalli. A meeting will be held to get the proposals finalised and sent to the Centre at the earliest. Currently the hostels lack facilities, safety and security. Private hostels charge exorbitant rents but don’t provide inmates with adequate facilities. The new plan is to have two categories of inmates and depending upon their income levels, rent will be charged. Those who need government support will have to pay less. At the same time, there will not be any discrimination between them with regard to the provision of facilities.
