If you’re craving Bengali cuisine then save a trip to Kolkata and head to the unique pop-up at Masala Klub, Taj West End that is on till this Sunday. Feast on some of the chef’s specials at this pop-up that recreates the legacy of the Sonargaon ‘The Golden Village’ at Masala Klub. Originally housed at Taj Bengal, Kolkata, Sonargaon at Masala Klub offers Jamidari Bangla Ranna influenced by the royal houses of Murshidabad, Coochebehar and Bardhaman. Feast on some lip smacking appetisers like the Begun Bhaja (shallow fried eggplant slices), Mangsher Chops (minced lamb croquettes) and Mochar Chops (Bengali style banana flower cutlets) for vegetarians. For main course try the Betki Macher Paturi (mustard marinated steamed fish wrapped in banana leaves), Macher Jhol (fish stew with vegetables), Murgir jhol (spicy Bengali style thin chicken curry) or Kosha Mangsho (lamb cooked in special Bengali masala). Vegetarians will love the Sukto (chef special local vegetable in bitte gourd stew), Aloo jhinge posto (potato and ridge gourd cooked in poppy seed paste) and Narikel diye cholar dal (Bengali style chana dal with coconut and ghee). Mop it up with hot, deep fried luchi and Ghee bhat or Basanti Pulao (flavoured rice with saffron, raisins and cashewnuts). No Bengali meal is complete without a dessert. Bite into the syrupy Rosogolla, or the decadent Sandesh. The chefs here have raised the bar with this Bengali speciality which is popular not just among the Bengalis but among everyone who has the palate for a few good things in life. Leave space for the Nolen gurer ice cream, which will leave a lingering taste in your mouth.
