Solar eclipse to be visible today

Tamilnadu,, parts of South East Asia and Australia will witness a solar eclipse today. The eclipse will be visible between 8.09 a.m and 11.19 a.m. The moon will move in an elliptical orbit around the earth. Dr. Soundararajaperumal, Executive Director, Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre advised the public to avoid viewing the event with naked eyes as it may cause damage to the eyes. Public can view the eclipse at the B.M. Birla Planetarium, Periyar Science and Technology Centre between 8.09 a m. and 11.19 a.m.

The previous eclipse was on January 15, 2019 and astronomers have predicted that India will have the next eclipse on June 21st 2020. It will be visible to areas in Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttarakhand. Tamilnadu however will witness the next eclipse only 11 years later on  May 21st 2031. It is called annular solar eclipse as the partial blocking will result in an annular structure appearing like a ring of fire.
