Gaiyathiri Murugayan, a woman from Singapore is the wife of a policeman. She hired a maid from Myanmar. The maid named Piang Ngaih Don was tortured and starved and weighed only 24 kgs when she died from the injuries inflicted on her in 2016 by Gaiyathiri and her mother.
Gaiyithiri pleaded guilty to the charges against her including culpable homicide against her maid. The prosecution has described her actions as evil and utterly inhumane.
The judge who heard the case said that it was one of the worst cases of culpable homicide that he had heard so far. It was found that Gaiyathiri began abusing and torturing her maid right from October 2015 when she arrived in Singapore for her first job overseas. The CCTV footage from cameras installed in the house proved the abuse that the maid suffered especially during the last month of her life. She was burned with an iron box and given bread soaked in water, cold food from the fridge or just plain rice. She lost 15 kgs weight in just 14 months due to lack of proper food.
Gaiyathri has been sentenced to 30 years in prison while her husband has been suspended from his job.
