Senior CPI (M) leader and former Kerala health minister K.K. Shailaja has declined to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award. She thanked the organizers and politely refused the award.
She told reporters in Kerala that she took this decision after consulting the party’s national leadership. According to her, she was named for the award for the work done by collective effort and she did not feel it was proper for her to receive it in her individual capacity. Moreover, the award was in the name of Ramon Magsaysay who had the history of brutal oppression of the communists in the Philippines.
The award was being given for the manner in which public health issues have been managed in Kerala.
