Kusum Singh Mahdele, a senior BJP leader and former minister created a flutter by questioning the rationale behind Hindu women observing ‘Karwa Chauth’ which meant wishing safety and longevity for their husbands. She tweeted questioning why the male- centric festival being thrust on Hindu women.
She tweeted that festivals like these are observed by the women praying for long life for their husbands or brothers but there is no festival where men pray for the long life of their wives. This caused discomfort in the BJP which takes pride in espousing Hindu culture. The party has chosen not to react to her comments. Moreover, Kusum Singh is not a stranger to controversy. She was denied a party ticket to contest the 2018 elections as she had crossed the age of 70 fixed by the party to contest elections.
