Schools in Tamil Nadu reopen today for classes 9 to 12 but the students will not be compelled to attend physical classes. They are permitted to continue with online classes.
A public interest litigation has been filed by K. Abdul Vahabudeen of Tirunelveli seeking a direction to permit the students to opt to attend classes online. The petitioner apprehended that the third wave of Covid-19 and the absence of vaccination of students would make them gullible for the virus and they should not be compelled to attend physical classes.
Advocate general R. Shanmugasundaram, appearing for the state submitted that the state was taking all precautions and were following the Covid-19 standard operating procedures. He further submitted that the present online classes would continue and the students will not be compelled to attend physical classes.
A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Justices M.Duraiswamy and K.Murali Shankar took cognisance of the submissions and adjourned the case to September 7 for the State government to file a counter.
