In Tiruvallur district, the Tamilnadu State Rural Livelihood Mission together with an NGO – the Integrated Rural Community Development Society are providing training in tailoring and beautician courses for girls who drop out of school.
In 2019, 59 child marriages were stopped and 47 were stopped in 2018. The average age of the school dropouts was below 18 years, an age when they were being married off. This is when they were given training. About 20 of them were given three months of training in tailoring and beautician courses. They completed the course and were given certificates. They will be provided with free sewing machines and beautician kits to enable them to earn a living. Some of them would also be provided with jobs.
