The Supreme Court granted relief to Arnab Goswami, the editor – in- chief of Republic TV and gave him three weeks protection from any coercive action against him by the police in a hate case. The Bench led by Justice D.Y.Chandrachud heard the case through videoconferencing and suggested that he could use this period of three weeks to file a petition for anticipatory bail. The court also permitted the case registered at Nagpur to be shifted to Mumbai for further investigation.
The Bench further stayed action on all the other FIRs registered in Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Telangana and Jammu and Kashmir. The court takes up only extremely urgent matters during the lockdown period and that too through videoconferencing. Arnab had also filed a petition seeking police protection as he was attacked by two men. The court directed the Mumbai police to grant him the required protection.
