With the ban on women drivers being lifted, a number of women are taking to the roads. Many are training at new state run driving schools and about 3 million women are expected to drive by 2020. The ban was in place from 1957.

Renault gave Aseel Al Hamad, the first Saudi Arabian woman a chance to drive one of its cars. The lifting of the ban besides being welcomed all over the world, also had its share of protesters. Some of them are in jail as their peers take to the road. Social media erupted in celebration and the day was hailed as Independence day.
