The properties of ousted AIADMK leader V.K. Sasikala worth RS 1,600 crores has been provisionally attached under the provisions of the Benami Transactions ( Prohibition) Act. The properties are located in Chennai, Puducherry and Coimbatore. The Income Tax Department has issued attachment orders under section 24(3) of the Act. A communication has been sent to the authorities of the prison in Bengaluru where Sasikala is lodged.
There was an ‘Operation Clean Money’ conducted by the Income tax officials a couple of years ago in order to unearth the benami assets of Sasikala in 37 locations across Chennai, Coimbatore and Puducherry. It was found that properties were purchased in the names of household staff including drivers and assistants. More than 1800 officials were involved in the search operations held in offices, firms and farmhouses of Sasikala’s relatives throughout the country.
