Sania Mirza, the pride of Indian tennis was once told to stop playing tennis when she was a kid aged 8 years. The reason was that she would become dark complexioned because of her exposure to the sun and that nobody would marry her. She narrated this incident while speaking at the World Economic Forum.
She said that in our culture, it is deeply embedded that a girl has to be fair and pretty. She strongly felt that this wrong notion has to change at some point or the other. While reflecting on her career, she said that she drew a lot of inspiration from sprint legend P.T.Usha. She feels proud that she has had a role to play when people take up sport taking her as a role model. According to her in the past, there was only P T Usha. Today, we have Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu, Dipa Karmakar, Mithali Raj,etc. Married to cricketer Shoaib Akthar, she is working towards a comeback to the professional circuit next year after taking a break to become a mother.
