A Public Interest Litigation was filed by 8 lawyers in the Madras High Court seeking “women safety zones”. At present there is no security for women who travel for work or studies during night hours. The lawyers wanted police protection for women and wanted bus stands and railway station to be manned by police officials and social welfare officers.

The petition is listed for hearing by the first bench comprising of Chief Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani and Justice M.Duraiswamy. They also wanted a direction to be given to the State Government to establish hostels based on the model of YMCA – the Young Women’s Christian Association. Another plea was to direct the police to give due attention to complaints of sexual harassment and to treat women victims at the stations with due respect.
