Rs 2 crores collected as fines for not wearing face masks

The police in Chennai have imposed hefty fines on people for going out without wearing face masks.

The Corporation Commissioner and the nodal officers were given the responsibility to coordinate with agencies and the enforcement department to prevent the spread of the virus.  Between the last week of April and June 5th, 49,100 cases have been registered in the city and each violator was fined at least Rs 500/ for not wearing a mask. So far, 5.89 people have been arrested and 4.50 lakh vehicles have been seized. The fine collected so far totals to  about Rs  2 crores.
