The Tamilnadu government had earlier announced that schools and colleges would reopen from November 16, after Deepavali. However due to public outrage, the dates are likely to be deferred according to a senior official from the School Education Department.
A high level meeting including authorities from the School Education Department and the Higher Education Department was held but a decision is awaited. Health experts fear that due to the North East monsoon, students may catch viral infection and it may create panic among many confusing it with the coronavirus. Moreover many students will be travelling to their native place to celebrate Deepavali and they may not be able to return back in a day to attend classes. Meanwhile DMK President MK Stalin has requested the government to reopen schools and colleges after Pongal due to the likelihood of the second wave of the virus.
