The Assam Government has become the first state in the country to make it mandatory for children employed in the Government sector to maintain their aging parents and disabled and unmarried siblings.
The Act called the Assam Employees Parental Responsibility Norms for Accountability Monitoring Act,2017,or Pranam Act in short. Initially the Act would be applicable only to Government employees but they plan to bring all Public Sector Undertakings and Private Sector employees under this Act shortly. The Act enables aggrieved parents to lodge complaints against their children. An enquiry would be held and 10 to 15 % of their salary can be deducted for maintaining the parents or disabled siblings. The departmental heads were also empowered to hear appeals of both parties.
