In a big gathering of Catholic bishops and laypeople on October 27th, Pope Francis had called for giving more participation for women in church governance and called for research on allowing women to be deacons.

Progressives are hoping that the church will be more welcoming of LGBTQ people and women being offered more leadership roles. However, Conservatives are not for making any changes to the 2000 year old tradition of the church. They warned that opening a debate on such issues was a ”Pandora’s Box”.
Pope Francis however granted women and laypeople the right to vote alongside bishops as he felt that people in the pews are more important than the preachers. He also sought a restoration of female deacons, a ministry that existed in the early church.
The Pope has already increased the number of women in high- ranking positions in the Vatican and said that the same should be done in local churches.
