Chennai witnessed a partial eclipse and around 9.35 a.m., nearly 84.7% of the sun’s disk was covered by the moon. About 6000 people rushed to the Birla Planetarium to watch the eclipse. As schools were closed for the Christmas vacation, hundreds of children flocked to the Planetarium..
Crowds began to assemble at 6.30 a.m. itself. Officials at the Planetarium distributed 1000 solar glasses to the people to view the eclipse safely. Telescopes were set up and images were projected onto a white screen. The eclipse was first visible in Udhagamandalam, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode and then in Karur, Dindigul, Sivaganga, Tiruchi and Pudukottai districts of Tamilnadu. The next solar annular eclipse will occur on May 21 St, 2031.
