With the soaring price of onions in the country, and the price touching an all time high of Rs 160, onions have been imported from Egypt. 60 tonnes of onions arrived from Egypt in a bid to control the price rise. The Centre had planned to import one lakh tonnes of onions.
These onions look a bit different from our onions as they are darker in colour and more pungent. This move of the government is expected to bring down the price to around Rs 100 per kilogram in the next couple of days. Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswamy told reporters that prices would come back to normal in about 20 days time as the yield in the state had been normal and the harvesting would begin shortly.
