New King of Denmark sworn in on Sunday

After Queen Margarethe II of Denmark abdicated from the throne after reigning for 52 years, the prime minister of Denmark proclaimed Frederik X as King on Sunday. Queen Margarethe stunned the entire nation on New Years Eve when she announced her decision to step down from the throne. She has become the first Danish monarch in 900 years to voluntarily step down.

The coronation ceremony where King Frederik was proclaimed King was a simple one that took place at Christiansborg Palace. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed Frederik king from the balcony of the palace before the cheering crowd. She read the proclamation three times as per tradition and Frederik wore a ceremonial military uniform adorned with medals. He was later joined by his wife, the new Queen Mary and their 4 children. Queen Mary wore a white dress.
The eldest son of the couple Christian will become crown prince and heir to the throne.
