The mother of Nalini Sriharan who is a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case has moved the Madras High Court with a Habeas Corpus Petition seeking a direction to the State Government to take steps to save the lives of her daughter and son-in-law Murugan who were on a fast unto death demanding their early release. According to her petition, the State Government had already decided to release all the convicts in the case as they had spent more than two decades in prison.
However this decision could not be implemented because they had to get the assent of the Governor under Article 161 of the Constitution. Both Murugan and Nalini have undertaken a fast unto death seeking their release. Hence the petition was filed for the State to step in and save them from death
