A 14 year old boy in Mexico was set on fire by his classmates for speaking an indigenous language. Two of his classmates have been accused of pouring alcohol on Juan Zamorano’s seat in the central state of Queretano. Juan realized that his trousers were wet and stood up. At this moment, he was set on fire.
He suffered second and third degree burns and was taking treatment in hospital. Reports say that he has now been discharged from the hospital.
Juan was being bullied in school because of his indigenous Otomi roots. His family had filed complaints against his attackers and against school authorities. It is alleged that even Juan’s teacher is said to have harassed him because of his origin.
An investigation into the attack is being carried out and the perpetrators will face legal proceedings.
