Jacinda Ardern the New Zealand Prime Minister announced that she was pregnant and is set to be the country’s first leader to give birth while in office. She was sworn in last October and was all smiles as she appeared with husband Clarke Gayford to announce the unexpected but exciting news.
They will be welcoming their first child in June. Ms.Ardern said that she would take maternity leave of 6 weeks after the birth of her child and that Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters would take over the reins of office during that period. She reasserted that pregnancy and child rearing should not hinder women’s opportunities in the workplace and that every woman should have the choice of combining family and career.
