A college going young man, wore a niqab and glasses and played four rounds posing as a woman in the Nairobi Women’s Chess Open before he was caught.
John Mukabi, secretary general of the Kenyan Chess Federation said that this sort of incident has not taken place anywhere in the world.
Millicent Awour, a student at the University of Nairobi posed as a woman and took part in the women’s section of the 31st Kenya Open as he said he had no chance in the men’s section. After he was caught, he explained that he did this due to a better chance of winning the women’s competition prize money as he had a lot of financial problems.
He was later removed from the tournament and the scores were reversed.. He will have to appear before the Kenyan chess federation’s disciplinary committee next week and will face a suspension of many years.
