The Supreme Court of India ordered the immediate release of journalist Prashant kanojia on bail on the ground that he has been deprived of his personal liberty just for his social media posts. His family claimed that he was picked up from his home on June 8 by plainclothes men and taken to an undisclosed location because he allegedly posted a video on social media.
The Court said that liberty guaranteed under fundamental rights is sacrosanct and came down heavily on the Government of Uttar Pradesh for keeping the journalist in custody for about 14 days. While the court is not appreciative if the man’s tweets, it was bothered and concerned about his deprivation of liberty and directed his immediate release.
