The murder of model Jessica Lall in 1999 by Manu Sharma was one of India’s most high profile cases. Jessica was a model who was tending a bar in which Manu Sharma and his friends visited for a party. After the party wound up, it is said that Manu Sharma asked for another drink which was turned down by Jessica. Moments later he fired two gunshots at her from his pistol.
One shot hit her on the forehead and proved fatal. Sharma absconded but surrendered before a court in Chandigarh. The court battle resulted in Manu Sharma being convicted and sent to jail for life imprisonment. He spent 16 years, 11 months and 24 days in Tihar Jail. He was released after the Delhi government recommended for his premature release. The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi had given the final clearance for his release from Tihar Jail.
