Japanese emperor steps down

Emperor Akihito of Japan formally stepped down and made history as the first abdication in 200 years in the world’s oldest monarchy. His eldest son Naruhito, 59 will ascend to the throne. The 85 year old emperor performed the abdication ritual in the Imperial Palace in the presence of the imperial regalia. He thanked the people and offered his gratitude to the people of Japan at his farewell speech.

Emperor Naruhito will take over the reins and will inherit the imperial regalia in a ten minute ceremony after which he would make his first address to the nation as the 126th emperor. Crowds are expected to gather outside the palace. Security has been beefed up and extra police patrols have been placed on the streets . A public enthronement will take place on October 23rd during which Emperor Naruhito will parade through the streets of the capital.
