Jannik Sinner created history after he won the Australian Open. He returned to Italy and received a hero’s welcome. He had a meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at her office in the Chigi Palace. This was an informal meeting and they spoke like friends. Later, they posed for pictures and PM Giorgia gave Sinner a warm hug before he left.
Sports Minister Andrea Abodi accompanied Sinner to the PM’S office. Sinner became the first Italian man to win a Grand Slam singles title in nearly half a century. It was Adriano Panatta who won the French Open way back in 1976. Sinner also led Italy to its first Davis Cup title in 2023 November.
Pope Francis also congratulated Sinner for his victory.
Sinner and his Davis Cup teammates will be honoured by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
