The recent happenings make one wonder if Chennai is safe for women or is it losing the safe city tag. A few days ago, a drunken man fell on a passerby making her land up in the hospital with multiple injuries. Though the 4 year old girl Dhanyasri is recovering in the Apollo Children’s Hospital, imagine the trauma the small kid has to undergo for no fault of hers.Imagine the tension and the anxiety of the poor parents. No doubt, good Samaritans from across the globe have pitched in with timely help and the Tamil Nadu Government has also offered to undertake the medical expenses. However these acts of kindness will not alleviate the pain and mental agony of Dhanyasri and her family.

The other shocking incident is that of Lavanya. No passerby stopped to help the poor lady. She was beaten up and robbed of all her belongings which included her two Wheeler, I phone and her gold chain. What are we coming to? Are there no means to stop such brutal incidents. Many women have come to the conclusion that Chennai is unsafe for women and has lost the safe tag it had earlier.
There should be coordination between the government departments, companies and the community. This is the need of the hour.Companies should take care to ensure that their staff, women in particular reach home safely, and are not given tasks to meet clients after office hours. The government should pitch in by providing good illumination on the roads. There should also be police patrolling in lonely areas. Residents could also contribute by forming resident groups to assist the police. All these measures have to be done on a war footing if women are to feel safe in Chennai.
