The Madras High Court has held that intercaste marriages are in fact good for society as they break the shackles of the caste system. Justice Anand Venkatesh requested parents and elders to accept intercaste marriages while disposing a petition from a couple seeking police protection as they belonged to different castes.

The bride’s parents were against the marriage. The judge directed the police to summon the girls parents and instruct them not to interfere in the matter as both the groom and the girl were majors and they had a right to decide their future. The judge further held that if the parents still did not budge, and put forth any threats, he directed the police to give police protection to the bride and groom as well as the groom’s parents. The judge felt that the present generation was going in for intercaste marriages and thereby putting a death knell to the evils of caste system. It is good for the elders to accept the changes and go with the flow in the best interests of society.
