Indian American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal is the first South Asian American woman to preside over the US House of Representatives. The 53 year old Pramila is a Democrat from Washington. She took to Twitter to share a clip of Tuesdays session wherein she was seen presiding over the the House as a temporary speaker. It was a matter of pride for her to hold the gavel. The 116th Congress broke records with women and lawmakers crossing all racial and religious barriers .
A total number of 17 Asian Americans serve the Congress with 14 in the House and 3 in the Senate Even though Nancy Pelosi is the speaker of the House of Representatives since January 2019, members of the majority party in the House take turns to temporarily preside over the House.
