Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, an Indian-origin diplomat has been appointed as US Ambassador to Indonesia by President Joe Biden. She served the State Department for around 30 years and is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. She recently served as the Executive Secretary of the Department of State.
Kamala is a Harvard graduate and an M.S. from the National War College. Earlier, she served as an ambassador to Malaysia from 2017 to 2021.
She joined the Foreign Service in 1991 and served as Director of the Office of Maritime Southeast Asian Affairs, which included responsibility for US relations with Indonesia.
She also served in Northern Ireland, China, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.
She grew up in Westport, Connecticut and said that she was always interested to pursue an international career because of her parents.
